After pursuing studies in translating and interpreting, linguistics, theory of science, philosophy, information studies as well as economics at the Universities of Vienna and Barcelona from 1980-1988 which led to a PhD (linguistics) in 1988 he worked as wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter for the International Information Centre for Terminology (Infoterm), then situated at the Austrian Standards Institute. 1996-1998 Gerhard Budin worked for the International Society for Environmental Protection and from1997-1999 for Donau-Universität Krems. In addition to that he has been teaching terminology science, translation technology, LSP and information science as well as applied theory of science at the University of Vienna since 1989. He was a visiting professor at the Universities of Limoges (1997-1998), Paris VII (2002) and Donau-Universität Krems (since 2001). Ever since 1990 he has been invited to present and teach at seminars and Workshops at Universities worldwide. Since January 2005 he is a Full professor for translatory terminology science and translation technology at the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna. His interests are in terminology management, language, translation and knowledge technologies, localisation, multilingual information and knowledge management, international domain communication, intercultural technical documentation, LSP research, applied cognitive and science theory, intercultural eLearning and knowledge organisation.
Silvia Cerrella Bauer is Managing Partner of CB Multilingual, a company pr
oviding high-end multilingual communications solutions based in the Zurich region. From 2010 to 2011, she provided her expertise in various terminology research and training projects run by TermNet, International Network for Terminology, and served as Deputy Head of German language and Terminology at Swiss Post in Bern, Switzerland. In her role as Business Unit Manager Financial, she was responsible for the translation and terminology services provided to the banking and financial clients of euroscript Switzerland (Zurich), a provider of content life cycle, translation and localisation solutions, from 2008 to 2010. Prior to joining euroscript, Silvia was Head of Language Services of SIS SegaInterSettle AG, a Swiss financial services provider for the securities industry based in Zurich, from 1999-2008. She has participated as a speaker in various international forums on translation, terminology and technical documentation and published a number of articles related to these subjects. In 2011, Silvia has been appointed Vice President of ASTTI (Swiss Association of Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters), where she served as member of the Board for the last three years. Silvia holds a degree in Architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a post-graduate certificate in Corporate Communications. She is a certified conference interpreter and a certified terminologist.
Petra Drewer is Full Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe, Germany, where she is Vice Dean of the Department of Management and Engineering. Her teaching and research activities focus on multilingual documentation development and translation as well as terminology studies and terminology management. In these fields she is also active as a consultant for companies and institutions. Professor Dr. Drewer is active in the tekom, the German professional association for technical communication and Information Development, where she participated in the working groups “Textqualität” (Text Quality) and “Technisches Deutsch” (Professional German). She is a member of the German Standards Committee on Terminology and of the Council for German Language Terminology (UNESCO/RaDT). She is further a member of the scientific advisory board of the Deutscher Terminologie Tag (DTT) and of the Deutsches Institut für Terminologie (DIT). Professor Drewer holds a Diploma in “Technical Translation” (Spanish, French and English, electrical and mechanical engineering) and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Linguistics. Since 2003 she is Full Professor for Applied Linguistics at the University of Applied Sciences in Karlsruhe, teaching applied linguistics, professional German, terminology management and multilingual technical documentation in the Technical Communication Degree programs.
Klaus grew up with languages and computers in Austria and the US. He studied conference interpreting in Vienna & Monterey, California, and technical communication at Danube University Krems. Having a long work experience in the US translation industry, he founded in 1996 Kaleidoscope GmbH as a consulting & software company for international documentation, language processes and terminology management. Also co-founded the "ARGE International Documentation" in Vienna in 2000. Since 2008, Klaus is also Managing Director of eurocom Translation Services GmbH, Vienna and has helped many companies and organizations establish a terminology management process. lizabeth is Associate Professor and Director of Center for Translation Studies Director, Center for Translation Studies. He has presented lectures and university courses on terminology and translation management in Austria and abroad.
Elizabeth is Associate Professor and Director of Center for Translation Studies Director, Center for Translation Studies of Latin American and Caribbean Studies Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese in the University of Illinois. Elizabeth’s major teaching areas are literary translation, translation theory and practice, and terminology and computer-assisted translation. Her special research interests include inter-American literature, translation and reception theory and terminology. Lowe also has an interest in indigenous languages of the Americas and language policy. Elizabeth is the author of the book, “The City in Brazilian Literature” (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1982), and a co-author of “Translation and the Rise of Inter-American Literature” (University of Florida Press, 2007). She has contributed to seven other books and written two dozen journal articles and reviews.
Klaus-Dirk Schmitz is Full Professor of Terminology Studies at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne in Germany. His teaching and research activities focus on terminology theory and terminology management as wells as on software localization and computer tools for translators. Numerous articles and books where he acts as author, co-author and editor show his excellent expertise in these fields. Prof. Schmitz has also taken a leadership role in national and international forums e.g. as president of the Council for German Language Terminology (RaDT), president of the International Information Centre for Terminology (Infoterm), and chairman of the German Standards Committee on Computer Applications in Terminology. The formal training of Prof. Schmitz was actually in Computers and Linguistics. He holds a diploma in Computer Science and Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and Information Science, both from the University of Saarbrücken. He starts his academic career in ambitious research projects on Machine Translation and Translator’s Workbenches recognizing very soon that is wise and useful to concentrate more on training potential users of these tools and on developing more application-oriented and user-friendly versions of linguistic software. In 1992 he transferred his appointment from the University of Saarbrücken to the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies in Cologne where he also heads the Institute for Information Management as Managing Director.
Frieda Steurs is a Full Professor in terminology, technical translation and language technology and the head of the research group ‘Language and Computing’ at the Lessius University College, Antwerp, Belgium. She teaches Terminology and Documentation, Media and Translation and Technical and Scientific translation. Her research includes terminology management, language technology and standardisation. This has lead to several projects with industrial partners and government organisations. She is the founder of NL-TERM, the Dutch terminology association for both the Netherlands and Belgium. She is also the head of the ISO TC/37 standardisation committee for Belgium and the Netherlands and president of Coterm, the government body on terminology for the Netherlands and Belgium. Since October 2003, she is the head of the department translation and interpreting in the Lessius University College.
Sue Ellen Wright is a Professor of German and a member of the Kent State University Institute for Applied Linguistics, where she teaches computer applications for translators and German to English technical translation. She is the co-compiler (with Professor Gerhard Budin of the University of Vienna) of the Handbook for Terminology Management. She is active as a terminology trainer and consultant for companies and institutions, chair of the American Translators Association (ATA) Terminology. She chairs the US mirror group for TC 37 and helped develop the US standard for translation quality. She is chair of the TC 37 Data Category Registry Board, which administers the language resources metadata registry at http://www.isocat.org/.
