The Bank for International Settlements announces a vacancy for a terminologist/language-technologist in Basel

- Purpose of the job

  • To ensure that internal and external users have efficient access to up-to-date, consistent and well researched terminology and other multilingual reference material, and to analyse the BIS's evolving needs in this area.

- Principal accountabilities

  • Researches and compiles terminology in the economic, financial, legal, technical and administrative fields to assist internal and external users, preparing the results for distribution via the appropriate channels and in the requisite formats.
  • Designs and maintains BIS terminology and translation databases according to users' needs (eg in terms of content, level of technicality, usability) and manages data exchange with external users.
  • Manages computer-assisted translation tools, including testing, upgrading, troubleshooting, liaising with IT specialists and vendors, and monitoring industry developments. Trains and supports staff in the use of such tools and ensures optimal workflows.
  • Leads in-house and outsourced projects and activities in the relevant areas.

Job Requirements:

- Qualification

  • University degree, preferably in translation studies or computational linguistics. Specialisation in terminology, or proven ability to perform the tasks commensurate with such formal qualification.

- Skills

  • Very good knowledge of English, with proven drafting skills, and of at least two of the other BIS working languages (French, German, Italian, Spanish).
  • Excellent IT skills and very good knowledge of standard MS Office applications and computer-assisted translation tools; experience in making structured content available on the web would be a plus.
  • Keen interest in economics, banking and finance.
  • Sense of initiative; ability to prioritise own workload and to shape this new position according to developing requirements.
  • Very good interpersonal and problem-solving skills; flexibility, team spirit, customer orientation and attention to detail.
  • Project management skills is an advantage.

- Work experience

  • At least three years' professional experience in the field of terminology, translation or computational linguistics, including in-depth experience with computer-assisted translation tools, preferably SDL Trados Studio 2009.
