TermNet - International network for terminology

TermNet Member, the European Central Bank offers a position as Terminologist

In the context of the establishment of a banking supervision function at the European Central Bank (ECB), the Directorate General Communications and Language Services (DG/C) is seeking an experienced and suitably qualified expert to work as terminologist/language technologist in its Language Services Division (LGS).

The Directorate General develops and implements the ECBs external and internal communications policy, including that of the single supervisory mechanism (SSM). It informs the media, the general public and specialist audiences about the ECBs tasks, missions and policy decisions. To this end, DG/C manages various communication tools, such as press releases, press conferences, publications, the ECBs internet and intranet websites, and all multimedia activities, and organises high-level meetings, conferences and events. DG/Cs tasks also include the provision of language services (editing, translation and proof-reading as well as terminology services) for non-legal documents in all official languages of the EU. DG/C cooperates closely with the national central banks of the Eurosystem and the European System of Central Banks, as well as the national supervisory authorities of the SSM, in order to enhance the consistency of the ECBs communications.

The Language Services Division is structured in three linguistic sections and a Terminology/Language Technology Unit and is responsible, inter alia, for translating the ECB's official publications and other materials from English into the other official EU languages in close collaboration with the national central banks and, in future, with the national banking supervisory authorities.

Within the Language Services Division, the Terminology/Language Technology Unit is responsible for providing terminology and language technology support to the ECBs translators and lawyer-linguists and to the linguistic staff at the central banks of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) in their work of preparing the ECBs official publications, legal acts, and other communications-related activities in the official EU languages.

The successful candidate will join a team of four terminologists/language technologists and a terminology/language technology assistant, and will be entrusted with the following main tasks, for which he/she will be jointly responsible with the other members of the Terminology/Language Technology Unit:

    on the terminology side: coordinating terminology-related work with the ECBs translators and lawyer-linguists, researching and compiling ESCB-related terminology in the official EU languages from a multiplicity of sources, and contributing to the development, maintenance, expansion and management of the ECBs multilingual terminology databases in accordance with the needs of their users;
    on the language technology side: managing the language technology tools used at the ECB (including testing, upgrading and troubleshooting) and supporting the ECBs translators, lawyer-linguists and their collaborators in the use of these tools, incorporating them into the linguists workflow, and creating and administering translation memories;
    monitoring the development of, evaluating and testing new language technology tools or software for their usefulness in facilitating the work of the ECBs linguists and of their collaborators.
To enable the Unit to fulfil its tasks of supporting the ECBs linguists in performing their work as well as to ensure the smooth operation of the ECBs language technology tools, the successful applicant will occasionally be expected to provide expert-level support and/or perform essential maintenance work during non-standard working hours.

Qualifications and experience:

Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:
    Ideally a masters degree in the field of translation, language technology or terminology, or a bachelors degree combined with four years of relevant professional experience;
    two years of relevant professional experience (preferably as a terminologist or language technologist), with proven experience of practical translation-oriented terminology work or proven experience of support for language technology tools;
    excellent knowledge of terminology management and translation memory software packages such as the SDL suite of translation tools. Please include a description of your experience with the tools;

This will involve a strong commitment to teamwork within the TLT unit, demonstrated by the ability to share information and support unit members in the achievement of common goals, as well as the ability to manage her/his own workload independently, without burdening other unit members unnecessarily;
